Your children's safety comes first โ always. These guidelines are designed to help every family on PlayDates have a positive, safe experience from first message to first playdate.
We built safety into the platform from the start:
You can only message a family after both sides accept the connection. No cold contact, no unsolicited messages.
Every account is tied to a verified phone number. This creates accountability and helps us act quickly on reports.
Families with the verified badge have confirmed their identity through Stripe Identity โ the same technology used by Airbnb, Lyft, and major financial institutions. A real government ID and a live selfie. Automated. No PlayDates staff ever sees your documents.
PlayDates never asks for or stores photos of children. Profile photos are of parents only.
Your street address is never shown to other users. Only your city and state are visible on your public profile.
We just added government ID verification powered by Stripe Identity โ the same technology used by Airbnb, Lyft, and major financial institutions. Here's specifically what it does:
A parent takes a live photo of their government-issued ID (driver's license or passport) and a selfie. Stripe's system confirms the ID is real, unaltered, and that the selfie matches the face on the document. When it passes, a verified shield badge appears on that parent's profile โ visible to every other family.
What this means in practice: a bad actor would need to present a real government ID in their actual name and face to get a verified badge. That's not foolproof, but it creates real legal accountability that didn't exist before. Providing false identification is a crime, and the record exists.
What I want to be honest about: this is identity verification, not a criminal background check. Those are different things. A full background check requires a different legal framework โ written consent, FCRA compliance, a credentialed screening agency. That's something I'm actively exploring as the platform grows, but I won't claim to do it before I've done it properly.
So here's where we stand right now, layered together:
Is this the same as a school doing a background check on a volunteer? No. Is it significantly more accountable than a Facebook group, a neighborhood app, or meeting someone at a park? Yes โ because at a playground, you know nothing about the person you're talking to. Here, every verified parent has confirmed their real identity to a third party.
Be cautious if another user:
Pressures you to meet quickly or share personal details before you're ready
Provides inconsistent or vague information about themselves or their family
Asks to connect outside PlayDates before meeting in person
Sends messages that feel inappropriate, pushy, or make you uncomfortable
Asks questions that seem focused on your children rather than family connection
If you encounter behavior that makes you uncomfortable or seems unsafe, please report it immediately. We take every report seriously and will investigate promptly.
Email us at hello@playdates.club with details about the account and what happened. For urgent safety concerns, contact your local law enforcement first.
I built PlayDates because I wanted my own family to find its people. That means this community has to be safe โ not just for you, but for every child and parent here. I personally review safety reports and take them seriously. If something feels wrong, please reach out.
